The brief from our clients in Marrickville was simple. They wanted their backyard in the middle of a townhouse development in the centre of Marrickville to feel private, be private and surrounded by colourful but natural colours with the use of interesting plantings and choice of materials. They wanted the garden to be simple and functional but still get a wow factor from their guests on arrival.
This backyard was a blank canvas for custom creations to work with as there was nothing the clients wanted to keep at present.
Being a townhouse in a very developed area there were certain challenges and problems that needed a solution. Privacy was important to the clients so the installation of a spotted gum hardwood screen was installed across the back of the garden. This provided privacy from the neighbours at the rear and a wonderful backdrop for the tropical style plantings in front.
In order to provide some additional interest to the garden we introduced a raised sandstone planter box. This hand shaped solid sandstone wall would become part of the main feature of the garden. It provided level changes to create interest which also acted as a seat and more importantly allowed space for the tropical style plantings the client wanted to help create a sense of intimacy. This sandstone wall was a particular challenge for the teams as the nearest area where the materials could be dropped off was 120m away, up two flights of stairs and could only be carried by hand due to the site conditions however, It was worth it!
The western boundary wall included the construction of a recycled hardwood railway sleeper feature wall. Within this wall we constructed a completely hidden gate that consisted of a steel frame and railway sleepers that were cut down in thickness to 30mm. When closed, this gate looks like an extension of the wall and is only known by the clients and there surprised guests. In order to provide contrast in colour and texture we installed 600 x600 Travertine paving with the inclusion of a hidden drain between the sandstone wall and the paving.
Two raised hardwood planters were installed to provide the opportunity for an Aloe Barberae and other seasonal and tropical plantings. We worked with the client to carefully select tropical plants that would provide colour, privacy and attract wildlife for them to enjoy.
This truly is a garden we really loved creating for our client!
